UFOs and Aliens Were Hot Topics for Celebrities in 2011

From tweeting about UFOs to sharing their thoughts on government UFO conspiracies, celebrities were vocal about their UFO beliefs in 2011. Some have even tweeted their personal UFO sightings.
The first big celebrity UFO news of the year took place on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on March 8. Leno asked Aaron Eckhart, star of the alien attack flick Battle Los Angeles, his thoughts on UFOs. Surprisingly, he shared a personal UFO sighting. Even more surprising, Leno’s next guest, super model Christie Brinkley, wanted to share her own UFO stories. She said she had seen UFOs on several occasions, but recounted a sighting she had in Cyprus.

Not to be out done, Sammy Hagar went on Leno’s show later that month to recount his communication with extraterrestrials. Hagar had recently released his memoirs, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock, in which he included his encounters with UFOs and aliens. Of course it became a hot topic in publicity interviews for the book. However, Hagar isn’t known to be shy, and answered any question brought to him. He even made fun of himself on a skit on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

On the last day of March, in an interview about her new music video in which she dresses like an alien called E.T., Katy Perry told MTV that she and her then husband, Russell Brand are “so into extraterrestrial stuff.”
On April 1, actress Sigourney Weaver told the German magazine TV Spielfilm:
We are not alone in the universe. I think there’s a department in our (the U.S.) government which is exclusively dedicated to quashing reports about aliens. And that’s so unfair. It would be nice if we weren’t just able to read about it in the tabloids.
Famous director, Steven Spielberg, made news twice regarding E.T. statements in 2011. The first time was in June in an interview with Ain’t it Cool News, Spielberg confirmed a long-standing rumor. In 1981, Spielberg was invited to the White House for a screening of his movie E.T.: The Extraterrestrial. Spielberg told Ain’t It Cool News:
He [President Ronald Reagan] just stood up and he looked around the room, almost like he was doing a headcount, and he said, “I wanted to thank you for bringing E.T. to the White House. We really enjoyed your movie,’ and then he looked around the room and said, ‘And there are a number of people in this room who know that everything on that screen is absolutely true.’
Until this interview, no one was sure whether the rumors of Reagan’s comments were true. However, even though Spielberg confirmed that Reagan had said it, he says the room erupted in laughter. He went on to say: “I’m a little bit of a ufologist. I was hoping that there was something more to the joke than met my eye. I’m sorry to say I think he was simply trying to tell a joke.”
Later in the year, Spielberg further confirmed his fascination with UFOs when he revealed that the movie E.T. was originally based on a famous UFO sighting and alien encounter in Kentucky in 1955.
A personal UFO celebrity encounter I am really jazzed about was meeting movie star Thomas Jane, the current lead in the HBO series Hung. He was at the Mutual UFO Network’s annual symposium, and is really into UFOs. I was even more excited when he tweeted about me and then retweeted me later the same day. In August, I had another celebrity UFO encounter when I got to interview Dan Aykroyd about UFOs. He is a long time UFO buff, and his twitter bio even lists him as a ufologist.
October saw a slew of UFO tweets from celebrities. The first one came from Demi Lovato on October 10, then Billy Ray Cyrus on October 23, and finally Victoria Beckham on October 28. The two later tweets included UFO pictures.
In November, Huffington Post blogger Lee Speigel interviewed Robin Leach on his UFO interest, and the most recent poster child for UFO celebrities, Robbie Williams, supposedly shunned singers on the X-Factor to talk UFOs with Johnny Robinson.
In December Ridley Scott did several interviews stating that his new movie Prometheus is heavily influenced by the theory that aliens helped mankind’s development along the way. George Clooney shared a dissenting opinion on UFOs. He ponders, “Now that every single human being on earth has a camera phone, where are all those UFO pictures?” However, Blink 182 singer Tom Delonge went on a popular paranormal radio show declaring his great interest in UFOs. He says when Blink 182 signed their first record deal he took the “very first check from them and bought a computer specifically to go on the Internet to research UFOs.” He sponsors a website on the topic called Strange Times.
Even though celebrities are known for being wild and crazy, even this rowdy bunch has seemed reticent to talk about UFOs in the past. Those days seem to be over, and I say good riddance.
