COVID CRISIS Coronavirus UK LIVE: New data shows deaths top 48,000 as furlough scheme to be changed TODAY

THE UK’s true coronavirus death toll is higher than 48,000, according to new figures released this morning.

The shocking news was revealed on the day Chancellor Rishi Sunak is set to make changes to the furlough scheme, with reports suggesting employers will be asked to pay 20 per cent of employees wages along with national insurance and pension contribution.

And last night, Boris Johnson eased lockdown measures further last night, revealing groups of six can meet in parks and gardens from Monday.

Speaking in yesterday’s daily Downing Street briefing, the Prime Minister said the latest changes would allow friends and families to see each other for the first time in months, giving Brits a new lease of freedom.

Mr Johnson said: “We will now allow people to meet in gardens and other outdoor spaces. This means friends and families can now see their loved ones.

“I know for many this will be a long awaited and joyful moment.”

Boris Johnson also revealed last night:

People can play golf in groups of four, and tennis doubles from Monday
Schools will open on June 1 – but only for children in reception, year one and year six.
Non-essential shops can reopen from June 1 and June 15
