What Is Mental Alchemy And How Can It Be Beneficial To Us In Our Daily Lives?

– During the Middle Ages alchemists tried to transform base metal into gold.

Mental alchemy is also a process that involves transmutation, only it applies to our spiritual growth and problem solving. By altering certain aspects of our lives to make them more compatible with our goals, we can improve our lives and expand our minds.

The fundamental part of mental alchemy focuses on how to replace our beliefs that are hindering our development with positive ones that helps us. It may sound like something that is easy to achieve, but in reality, it’s a long and hard practice that can be very rewarding for the individual who seriously attempts to go through the process.

The term ‘Mysticism,’ comes from the Greek and means “to conceal.” In the Hellenistic world, ‘mystical’ referred to “secret” religious rituals. In early Christianity, the term Mysticism became associated with “hidden” allegorical interpretations of Scriptures and hidden presences, such as that of Jesus at the Eucharist.

It was only later that the term represented “mystical theology,” which included direct experience of the divine. Today, we define Mysticism as a spiritual belief stating that a connection can be obtained with God or the spirits through thought and meditation. Mysticism involves distinctive practices, discourses, texts, institutions, traditions, and experiences aimed at human transformation, variously defined in different traditions.

Mystics are practicing spiritual alchemy that focuses on finding a suitable path and involves various practices that allow us to listen to the voice of our own soul. It’s about understanding who we are and what our purpose is life and on this planet. Spiritual alchemy reminds of the Native American vision quest that is meant to open the door to the spiritual world and help us find our path in life.

The founders of all major religions have attempted to go through this transformation. by studying universal laws that speed up the process, Mystics have provided rules and methods to help people achieve what they call a “realized state” that eventually leads to a happier and more productive life.

Leaving behind our beliefs in not easy and perhaps even much harder than most of us think. Practicing mental alchemy does not mean we should abandon all our beliefs, only those that hinder our development. If we think about it, it becomes clear that many of the thoughts by which we shape our lives are abstract. They are what we believe, but they have not yet been experienced and perhaps cannot be.

According to Edwin Harkness Spina, an award-winning author, speaker and mystic who wrote the book Mystic Secrets Revealed: 53 Keys to Spiritual Growth and Personal Development, there are three reasons why it’s extremely difficult to change beliefs.

Spina explains that “Most people mistake their beliefs for the truth. Even if it’s not in their best interest, some people resign themselves to their fate, because they mistakenly accept a belief as tur, and therefore fixed.”

A second problem that delay personal growth is that “beliefs operate at the subconscious level. Most people are unaware of their subconscious beliefs, which are often in conflict with their conscious thoughts.”

As an example, Spina mentions that some of may be seeking to manifest a healthy love relationship, but subconsciously we may feel that we are unworthy. Unless our belief is made conscious and transmuted, it will continue to sabotage our efforts.

Last, we should not forget that we see what we believe. “Less than 100 years ago, physicists were trying to determine whether light was a wave or particle. They discovered that the answer depended on what you believed you would find. If you believed light was made of particles, then you could design an experiment to prove it. Conversely, if you believed light consisted of waves, then you could design another experiment to prove it.”

According to neurologists our brain does not know the difference between what is actually experienced and what we imagine we are experiencing. “The same electrical patterns are fired between the neurons in the brain for both. The electrical patterns in the brain reflect how we store and process information, including beliefs.”

In our article use Your Mind To Change Reality – It’s Easier Than You Think, we discussed how difficult it is to imagine that our most happy, sad and emotional moments in life are simply nothing more than an illusion created in our minds. The same can be said about many of our beliefs that are abstract. We believe many things we simply don’t even know are real and yet we hang on to those beliefs and they often hinder our spiritual growth.

Mental alchemy is all about taking control of our thoughts and change our beliefs to your advantage. To put it simply, we can turn something bad into something good using only thought. Remember, it’s all in your mind.
